Two swimmers die in separate incidents at Exiles and Xlendi Bay

25-year-old dies following midnight swim while 67-year-old found unconscious at sea

Two swimmers died at sea in separate incidents overnight between Monday and Tuesday.

Police said the first incident was reported at Exiles in Sliema at 1am, when a 25-year-old Nepalese man who lived in Qormi found himself in trouble while swimming with some friends.

He was brought to shore by his friends and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital but died a short while later.

Hours later, emergency crews in Gozo were called to attend to a similar incident in Xlendi Bay.

People at the Gozitan bay contacted police at around 7.15am to report a man seen unconscious at sea.

The man – a 67-year-old from Munxar - was brought to shore by people in the area and given first aid. However, he was certified dead some time later.

Police are investigating both incidents, which are also the subject of magisterial inquiries.
