Much needed restoration work on Mdina's main gate is set to be completed at the end of this month.

The work is being carried out by the Restoration Union of the Works Department.

The project was taken in hand at the beginning of the year but completion was delayed by a month because workers were required for urgent work elsewhere, architect-in-charge Norbert Gatt said.

The project is the most comprehensive since the gate was built in 1724.

Mr Gatt said works consisted mostly of cleaning and consolidation. Replacement of stone was kept to a minimum. Instead the workers used ‘plastic repair' using a lime-based mix to repair the stone, particularly the decorative elements.

Greek's Gate, the other gate to Mdina, was restored in 2004.
