Art education, experimentation
Clive Gerada's work in graphite.
Six art education students will display their works at St James Cavalier, in Valletta, in an exhibition entitled Sch ism.
The exhibition opens on May 24 and runs until June 23. Conceived as a drawing exercise, the event started to acquire a rather different format in the last few months as students tested different materials and endeavoured to push the limits of traditional drawing techniques.
Some of the drawings are in graphite or cut up into little squares that form a larger work when assembled, like pixels on a computer screen. Others are produced using smoke and even cigarette ash, sculpted in mixed media or were conceived using digital photo editing and three-dimensional software.
The themes of the works either deal with problematic existential issues like life and death or examine controversial issues related to morals and medicine.
The title Sch ism can, therefore, be understood on different levels: As a break with orthodox thinking patterns, as a dissection of social mores and as a new kind of artistic "ism".
The exhibiting students are Emanuel Bonnici, Laura Cachia, Clive Gerada, Louise Mallia, Maria Micallef and Massabielle Zammit.
