I have been visiting Malta for over 25 years, and during that time I have seen enormous changes in the island. Some good, some not so good. However, I must say that I find the island is looking so very much better in recent years, despite the constant over-building that seems never to end. The government is really improving the look of the island. The trees, plants and flowers are really lovely to see. Many great restorations are underway - Howard Gardens and the Palazzo Falson in Mdina spring to mind. If only the island were as clean to match.
While there I walked through many residential areas and was horrified at the large amount of general litter and rubbish everywhere. I walked through areas where beautiful villas were for sale for well in excess of €1 million. Often the vacant building plots next to these were nothing short of rubbish tips. Glass and plastic bottles, general household waste, old furniture, rusting hot water tanks and building waste and take-away food wrapping were in abundance. Added to which the odd dead cat, left rotting on the grass next to the pavements in full view. Dog excrement was everywhere too, despite the notices to clean it up.
Tourists can't be blamed for all this. I witnessed cars being cleaned and polished, steps being washed down, then saw the house owners drop cigarette packets as they drove away. The Maltese need to be more proud of their country and make it as attractive as possible. I visit many times a year and on this last visit, the situation seemed worse than ever.
I understand one of the old names for Malta was Melita...maybe that should now be Melitter. Come on Malta, you have a great country...clean it up or travellers will not return. I shall, because I have friends there but many I am sure will not.
