One World - Protecting the most significant buildings, monuments and features of Valletta (26)

Palazzo De La Salle

This palazzo in Triq ir-Repubblika has an astylar façade with extensive bare wall surfaces punctured by small window openings at ground floor and regular window openings at first and second floor levels.

The mouldings at first floor are in alignment with the elaborate dripstone over the main entrance while those at second floor level have an alternating row of human faces and fleur-de-lys decorations. A corner balcony supported on ornate corbels wraps around the decorated corner. There is a framed family coat-of-arms above the second window from the left on the upper floor.

The major feature of the façade is the doorway with its distinctive circular opening situated between the door and lintel, and the corbels supporting the hood mould. Above the window over the door is an escutcheon within a square frame.

Palazzo de la Salle was bought by Grand Master Raymondo Perellos y Roccaful for his nephews in 1715, hence it is also known as Palazzo Perellos.

Mepa scheduled Palazzo De La Salle as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.

I second this view. As a visitor to Malta I would love a collection of your articles, with photographs. How about publishing a booklet?

All very interesting.
May I suggest a photo of the buildings you describe so that more people can relate to your articles? I might even learn what an astylar facade looks like without having to google it.
Cheers.
