(Updates condition to critical but stable)

Opposition health affairs spokesman Karl Chircop, 42, is in stable but critical condition after having been hospitalised last night suffering from cerebral haemorrhage

He is being treated in the intensive therapy unit. His wife and children are by his side.

The Labour Party in a statement this morning described Dr Chircop's condition as "critical".

It said Labour leader Joseph Muscat visited him in hospital.

Those who visited Dr Chircop this morning also included the Acting Speaker Carmelo Abela, Social Policy Minister John Dalli and former MLP leader Alfred Sant.

The family asked for its privacy to be respected.
