Bolton talks politics on arrival in Malta

World famous singer Michael Bolton on his arrival at the Malta International Airport, yesterday. Photo: Jason Borg.

Michael Bolton talked more politics and sounded more like a social worker than a renowned pop singer on his arrival at Malta International Airport yesterday.

Downing a coffee as soon as he landed, he said he was up till 5.30 a.m. to watch the US vice-presidential debate on CNN. But despite his tiredness, he was still excited to be here.

The singer, who is performing at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in Ta' Qali this evening, makes his political leanings clear before he talks about the show.

He just had to watch the debate and as to who impressed him most: "It's very easy. Barack Obama is going to be the US President!"

He is particularly into the vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden, who, he points out, is very strong on protecting women - something the pop star holds to heart. He co-authored the Violence Against Women Act and that says it all for Michael Bolton.

"Joe Biden has been my hero for years even though I love Hillary (Clinton) and have been very close to the Clintons for about 17 years. I would have wanted her to be the vice-presidential candidate but I think Obama made a wise choice in Biden.

"I think Obama is what we need and what the world needs," he says, expressing his confidence in his victory.

As to the social worker streak and the strong feelings on domestic violence - he even set up the Michael Bolton Charities - he says it is not his own personal experience as much as the way he was raised not to accept that kind of treatment.

"When you start doing that work and find out what's going on, it's appalling!" Before he gets carried away, Michael Bolton clarifies: "I'm not running for office; I'm running for the show tomorrow night!"

Offering some insight into it, without wanting to reveal too much, he says he has a great band he has been travelling with around the world. "We have some great horn players, who are women and are lots of fun...

"We can do the big band music but we can perform all the hits from When a Man Loves a Woman, to Time, Love and Tenderness and Steel Bars; even arias like Nessun Dorma.

"I'm giving away every song," he says, holding back. "It depends on the audience and how they feel... I'll be watching them... I'm really looking forward to it. I feel the energy. So many people got tickets so quickly, and yet, I've never been here."

While he's in Malta for just two days, Michael Bolton intends to see as much he can, "but I also... Well, I can't tell you, but I have a couple of plans". He has done his homework on Malta and he starts listing its vital statistics and the various conquerors - not bad for an American!

The singer, best known for soft rock ballads and tenor vocals, categorically claims that his appeal is cross-generational. That can be confirmed by the three female fans, waiting in the arrivals lounge. It's not so much the numbers, but the ages: 13, 27 and 51.

And it's the oldest one who is shaking the most. She waited four hours to fulfill her 20-year dream to touch Michael Bolton because the time of his arrival was kept under wraps.

Anna Calleja left her husband hungry and is glad he is not jealous. In fact, he encouraged her to go and greet her idol, saying: "Maybe he'll take you away with him!" Ms Calleja would only do dinner...

Where does the article mention terrorists?
L Genoves (on 5/10/08)
@Mr Gauchi
The Oklahoma bombing was a domestic attack executed by American Nationals and had nothing to do with any Arab Country or person.
A Federal Judge ruled that it was the Sudanese Government of that time that was responsible for the USS Cole attack.
The Centenniall Park bombing had nothing to do with Arab terrorists, but did have something to do with the then proposed abortion legislation going on in America.
CIA shootings were committed by a loner. Al Qaeda or any other Arab country had nothing to do with it.
Bush went to war under the pretext of weapons of mass destruction despite having been told that none existed prior . Al Qaeda had little influence in Iraq . Saddam and Al Qaeda were not friends by any stretch of the imagination. Iraq had nothing to do 9/11
Planning something and doing it are too different things. 9/11 could probably have been avoided
Bush went to War against the wrong people for the wrong reasons, he leaves behind him a legacy of suffering and bankrupt ideals unlike President Clinton who still, ten years after he retired is sought respected and admired.

@ Mr Genovese

Chances are that while Mr Clinton was entertaining Ms Lewinski at the White House Al Qaeda was planning 9/11. In fact most of the 911 hijackers moved to the US months prior to Bush's electoral victory. He was one of the worst president's in history. For your information this is the list of the major terrorist attacks on US citizens under Clinton's presidency: 2000 Attack on USS Cole in Yemen 1996 Centennial Park bombing 1995 Oklahoma CIty bombing 1993 CIA headquarters shooting.

I don't like Bush but under the circumstances he made the right decisions that is go to war. He had war declared upon his country in such a manner what did you pretend he would do?? Sometimes you have to go to war to keep your enemies on the defensive instead of waiting for the next 911 to occur.

@Mr daley

The American poor certainly have a lot to thank Mr.Clinton for including the fact, that despite heavy opposition he managed some sort of National health service for them.

I don't remember Mr Clinton taking the World to needless wars,or placing weapons of mass destructions on anybody's doorstep.and furthermore we actually liked and respected America when he was around. The chances are that 9/11 wouldn't have happened under his presidency.

Your remarks do not enhance your argument.

Michael Bolton should have indicated where his money is invested.

Let one remind Michael Bolton, that the same thing was said about Bill Clinton and the only thing he is and will always be remembered for, is pulling his zipper down!

No national Health service, no minimum wage, no retirement state pensions, in short nothing that Clinton promised had been implemented, and the same thing will happen if Obama is elected, except that he would allow Russia to lift it’s head yet again, as they are trying to do with the wealth from their Oil Industry.

I am absolutely appalled that there exists a man who cannot dish up for himself if his wife happens to be out of the house.

hey can somebody tell me why we re only having male muscians or artist coming to perform shows in malta?...why cant the organizers of these shows try bringing us a female artist atleast for a change pls pls....
cajetan schembri (on 4/10/08)
I wonder what Michael Bolton's reaction would be on reading the last paragraph of this article, in view of his proclaimed interest in gender issues. In any case, we are relieved to hear that Anna Calleja's husband is not jealous despite her having the effrontery to leave him starving to meet her idol !! Amusing reading in any case.
