Biometric passports
All passports issued through the Malta High Commission to Australia and New Zealand will be biometric.
The government launched Malta's first biometric passports on Wednesday.
The passport will retain its present format but will include a microchip embedded in it which contains the digitised facial image and personal details of the passport holder as they appear on the data page. The microchip can be read electronically at border controls.
The process to change to the new system is being implemented in three stages with the first stage taking immediate effect. This stage will introduce face-to-face identification at the application stage, the government said.
As a result of this change, the High Commission is instructed to inform all applicants that they must go in person, by appointment, to the High Commission in Canberra or the Consulates General at New South Wales and Victoria.
A new application form has been issued which includes an Image Capture Form.
Applications for passports can no longer be submitted through third parties nor can they be submitted directly by post.
