Gino Cauchi was elected Member of Parliament this morning in a casual election held to fill the seat vacated by the late Karl Chircop. He inherited 54 per cent of Dr Chircop’s votes.

Mr Cauchi, sales and marketing manager at One Productions - the Labour Party’s media arm, told timesofmalta.com just after he was elected that he was in a somewhat ambiguous situation because while he was happy at his election, the memory of his good friend Karl was very fresh.

He hoped that he would match his standards both in Parliament and in the fourth district, which had many needs, especially social ones.

The casual election was also contested by former MP Joe Brincat and Sebastian Muscat. This was the first time Mr Cauchi contested a general election.

He is a former mayor of Pembroke.
