An illegal immigrant has been jailed for 16 months after admitting his involvement in riots at the Safi Detention Centre on March 23.

Jawey Berti, 22, of Guinea was also fined 4,500 euros to make up for the damages he caused at the centre. Magistrate Saviour Demicoli said that if the fine was not paid, his prison term should be increased by six months.

On March 23, some 500 immigrants had gone out of the centre and threw stones at several people, injuring five officers. They broke and put on fire whatever they could lay their hands on.
