The restoration works being undertaken on Castille’s facade were this afternoon visited by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino.

The 44-month restoration project was launched last year by the Restoration Unit of the Ministry of Resources.

So far, the Merchants' Street side of the 16th century building has been cleaned of years of grime, restoring its splendour. Work is currently being undertaken on the right side of the building’s main door, at the corner with Merchants’ Street.

Castille’s walls have blackened over the years - a consequence of emissions from traffic and the Marsa power station.

The stonework, including elaborate sculptured decorations, also suffered deterioration because of the building's proximity to the sea.
