Millions of people marked the 30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon.
The former Beatle’s widow Yoko Ono led tributes with several hundred people gathering in his home city of Liverpool for a late night vigil.
Fans also congregated in New York, where crazed fan Mark Chapman shot the 40-year-old legend dead on December 8 1980, with other gatherings in places like Tokyo, Prague and Havana, Cuba.
In a freezing Liverpool last night, people lit candles and sang around a monument dedicated to the singer.
Peace and Harmony was unveiled earlier this year by Lennon’s former wife Cynthia and their son Julian in Chavasse Park.
Adam Byrne, 34, from the city, said: “I really do feel like I got a sense of peace here tonight.
“I think his message is still as strong as ever.”
Ms Ono, who was beside Mr Lennon when he was gunned down, performed at a charity concert in Japan called Dream Power John Lennon Super Live.
She said: “On this tragic anniversary, please join me in remembering John with deep love and respect.
“In his short-lived life of 40 years, he has given so much to the world. The world was lucky to have known him. We still learn so much from him today.
“John, I love you.”
