Two animal charities have come together to offer free health checks for dogs worth about €300 during the Christmas period.

Dogs Trust and the SPCA are offering neutering, microchipping, vaccination, preventative treatment for fleas and worms and a head-to-toe check-up.

Dog owners are encouraged to book an appointment between now and January 31 to avoid disappointment. Appointments can be scheduled until May 31 but they must be booked before January 31 and are supported by the Malta Veterinary Association and Happy Paws Clinic.

“It will not cost a dog owner a penny. Aside from health checks and vaccination to ensure your dog’s health, we’re keen to emphasise the importance of neutering and microchipping as part of being a responsible dog owner,” said Sarah De Cesare, Dogs Trust campaigns manager.

Microchipping was a safe and effective way of reuniting lost pets with their owners, she said.

Both organisations have been campaigning to help spread the word of responsible dog ownership across the country. For the last 18 months, they have run a successful campaign offering free neutering and microchipping for dogs belonging to those that receive social benefits as well as farmers, hunters and factory dog owners.

Dog owners interested in taking this free health check can call 7771 1100/7962 2262 or e-mail office@dogstrustmalta.com.
