Professor David Attard has been elected judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

He was elected this morning during the meeting of states parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Prof. Attard obtained the highest vote in the elections held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. He has been, since October 1992, the director of the IMO International Maritime Law Institute, which specialises in training lawyers, particularly those from developing countries, in the field of international maritime law.

There are to date over 590 lawyers who come from over 120 states who have studied at the institute.

In 1988, on Prof. Attard's advice, the government requested the United Nations

General Assembly to take action to protect global climate.

This initiative culminated in the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
