Developments in the field of illegal immigration have proved voluntary burden sharing is no solution, the Labour Party said yesterday.
In a statement, the PL said the government had presented voluntary burden sharing as a “magical solution”. However, the European Commission said its pilot project had failed.
The PL quoted a recent report that concluded EU member states should be “forced” to help Malta and other southern member states share the irregular immigration burden from North Africa, particularly from Libya.
The report was submitted by Nationalist MEP David Casa to the EU-ACP joint parliamentary assembly meeting in Denmark.
The PL said it had long been saying voluntary burden sharing was not the right solution.
