The Maltese band Wallace Pipes and Drums was invited to take part in the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee with a performance in Scotland.
The performance was part of Pipefest, a music event in Perth, Scotland. During the parade, some 1,000 musicians took part, with a number of bagpipe bands performing.
Among these was the Wallace Pipes and Drums, which was set up in 2000 and which today numbers 20 active members.
Drum major Kevin Vella, on behalf of the band, accepted a unique sporran, handmade specifically for the Jubilee celebrations.
The sporran symbolises the hard work carried out by Vella and his band. The band has recently collaborated with a number of international pipe bands, including The Black Watch and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers (who give a rock feel to the music of the bagpipes).
The band has also been invited to play at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland next year and the Basel Military Tattoo in Switzerland in 2015.
The Military Tattoo is considered to be the largest show of this type worldwide.
The band’s participation in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations was supported by the Malta Tourism Authority and the Good Causes Fund.
