Opposition leader Joseph Muscat said today that the Opposition wanted the government to present the Budget and was not planning to move a confidence vote since the Budget was a vote of confidence in itself.

Replying to questions in the wake of developments in Parliament yesterday, Dr Muscat said the Opposition respected the Speaker's ruling, although it did not necessarily agree with it.

He said the Opposition had no plans to move a confidence motion and never said that it would.

The government was saying that it wanted to present the Budget and the Opposition too wanted it to present the Budget if it did not have a problem of instability, Dr Muscat said.  Then the government should shoulder responsibility for the financial situation of the country, Dr Muscat added.

He said yesterday's ruling showed how the Standing Orders needed to be updated and a Labour government would be committed to bring about such a change.
