The field fennel known as bużbież il-qamħ or il-bużbież tal-barr (ridolfia segetum) is frequently found on clayey soils, including cultivated and abandoned fields.
It is similar to the common fennel (il-bużbież), with which it is sometimes confused, with similar foliage, flowers and fruit, but is annual, usually smaller in size.
The leaves are finely divided into numerous thread-like lobes and sheathing bases, smaller than that of the common fennel and also sweet-scented, with the upper leaves reduced to sheathing stalks with reduced leaves or without any leaves. Its flowers appear between April and June. The fruit are smaller than that of the common fennel.
