A new museum-cum-cultural centre, named Il-Ħaġar Heart of Gozo, was opened by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi in Victoria yesterday.

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech visited the museum last week. He was shown around by the museum’s coordinator and curator Mgr Joseph Farrugia.

The bishop expressed his satisfaction towards the “monumental project”, saying the museum showed the importance of religion in our history and could also be used as an evangelisation tool.

Mgr Grech donated two documents to Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria, which runs the museum. The documents, presented to the foundation chairmain Antoine Vassallo, consist of a holograph by the late Bishop Nikol Cauchi, delivered at St George’s Basilica during the centennial festivities in 1984, and an autographed letter by Pope Benedict XVI, sent to Mgr Grech following the Pope’s 2010 visit.

As part of the inaugural celebrations, the Cappella Sistina Choir yesterday gave a concert at St George’s Basilica.

Mgr Grech will celebrate Pontifical Mass at St George’s Basilica today at 11am. Taking part will be the Laudate Pueri Choir.
