The Malta Karate Federation (MKF) contingent, made up of 14 athletes, returned home recently with a bagful of medals after a fine showing at the Scottish Open Championships in Edin-burgh.

In fact, the young martial artists, whose ages varied from eight to 14, claimed one gold, three silver and eight bronze medals despite the stiff competition they faced in the prestigious competition.

Around 700 competitors, hailing from Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, France, Nigeria and Nepal, were involved in the various events.

The federation said the results obtained were the best ever by their members at the Scottish Open. They took part in both Kata and Kumite.

MKF technical director James Galea also competed in the seniors, placing third in his category.

The Maltese group was headed by Michelle Vella who was assisted by Frankie Vella, Galea and Joe Tanti.

MKF president Kenneth Abela said: “The level of participation as well as the technical levels witnessed throughout these competitions were commendable and these clearly show that our investment and hard work is reaping excellent rewards.

“These results will continue to encourage us to keep striving to improve the training and technical assistance the federation offers. This improvement also augurs well for the level of karate in Malta as well as the future of the federation.”
