The £60.8m Manchester United earned in TV rights last season was the highest ever received by any Premier League champion club.
After claiming a 20th league title in Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge, United also led the way in the money charts ahead of neighbouring rivals Manchester City and Londoners Arsenal.
Interestingly, Tottenham re-ceived more money than Chelsea who got just under £55m compared to Arsenal’s £57.1m. The lower fee is due to the Europa League winners appearing live on TV 16 times, compared to United’s 25, Arsenal and Liverpool’s 22, and Manchester City and Tottenham’s 21 times.
At the opposite end of the table, basement club QPR finished with just over £39.7m while Reading and Wigan – the other two teams to join QPR in relegation – got over £40m each.
Following a review of the TV rights contract, the 2013-14 league champions in England can expect to earn close to £100m in earnings while the bottom club should have their total rise to about £63m – more than United got from the 2012-13 campaign.
According to the Premier League’s formula, which officials insist is fairer than most of the other leagues in the continent, half of the domestic broadcasting income and all of the overseas TV money is split equally between the 20 clubs.
Of the rest, half is split as “merit money” and awarded according to where a club finishes in the final standings and the rest is paid in “facility fees” depending on how many times a club features live on Sky TV.
