Cypriot singer Ivi Adamou may have brought the song La La Love to European prominence at last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, where the song came in 16th place on the final night, but it’s 20-year-old Gozitan singer Gabriela N who has succeeded in taking the song across the Big Pond and into New York hit music online station Z100’s radio chart.
The Xewkija-born vocalist has been singing for the past 12 years, starting out by taking singing and dancing lessons and later gaining experience by taking part in various local music festivals.
Three years ago, she participated in the Malta Eurosong contest for the first time, making it to the second round. That same year, she released the ballad Where Are You Now, while a year later, she was one of the opening acts for popular novelty duo The Cheeky Girls when they performed in Malta.
How then, you may be asking, did this local girl get herself onto the Big Apple’s virtual airwaves?
Apparently, a few months ago, she decided to upload her version of Adamou’s song on You Tube, mainly to share with a few friends, only to be contacted by Z100 Iheartradio, who informed her that her song was one of the most requested songs among its listeners.
Her version got as far as the number two spot on Z100’s radio chart, a ranking based on the number of requests for the song. Interestingly, the top spot that week was occupied by Kawson, while hot on Gabriela N’s heels was Miley Cyrus.
At the time of going to print, La La Love was still at number two, while another of Gabriela N’s songs, Headspin, has also entered the same radio chart at number 15.
Further to all of this, the Gozitan artist is currently also ranked number one in the local and national chart for Malta on ReverbNation.
Gabriela N has been contacted by record labels from Los Angeles and by renowned producers whose track record includes working with a good number of A-list artists.
Meanwhile, a new single is in the pipeline for release later this year.
