A jeweller explained in court today how the man at the centre of the oil procurement scandal, George Farrugia, would turn up at his shop every year between 2007 and 2009 to buy gifts.
He was giving evidence in the case of former Enemalta Chief Projects Officer Ray Ferris, who stands accused of aggravated fraud, trading in influence and corruption.
Joseph Azzopardi of Azzopardi Jewellery said he had traced a cheque handed in by Mr Farrugia which amounted to Lm3,300 dated December 2007. Mr Farrugia had purchased three silver items.
He also presented an invoice for other items purchased by Mr Farrugia in December 2008, which included candle holders. The amount was €2,000.
Mr Azzopardi said Mr Ferris had called at the shop to return some of the gifts and exchange them for other item.
(Mr Farrugia will today be continuing his evidence before the Public Accounts Committee. The meeting will be reported live by timesofmalta.com)
