The Armed Forces of Malta are expecting to take delivery of a brand new Augusta AW139 helicopter at the end of the month.
A first picture of the helicopter was issued today.
It will be the first time in the history of the AFM that it would be taking delivery of a brand new helicopter. Another is on order. Both are co-financed by the EU. The contract for the first helicopter amounted to some €20.3m including the aircraft, spares, ground support and training.
The last time the AFM received helicopters were second-hand Alouettes donated by Libya in the 1980s.
The AW139 is an intermediate range twin engine helicopter. It will be used to perform border control tasks and SAR missions.
It has a maximum speed of 193 mph, a range of almost 600 miles, and service ceiling of 20,000 feet. This will enhance the AFM’s capability to operate out at sea for an extended duration and at a greater distance than what is currently possible.
The helicopter is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment package for maritime patrol and SAR missions that includes a high-definition FLIR system, search/weather radar, cabin mission console, naval transponder, search light, satellite communication system, a 4-axis autopilot with SAR modes, external rescue hoist and four bag floatation system.
The helicopter features the largest cabin in its category for greater mission flexibility and comfort.
