Defender Steve Borg is not joining Platinum Stars after the South African club pulled out of a deal to sign the Malta defender.
Borg, whose five-year contract with Valletta ran out at the end of last season, had agreed personal terms with Platinum Stars after leaving a very good impression during a trial.
The towering centre-half was so sure of joining Platinum Stars that he turned down the chance to reunite with Dutch coach Andre Paus at Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta.
However, Borg’s plans were turned upside down when, only days before he was due to travel to South Africa to complete his move, Platinum Stars reportedly informed him that they had withdrawn their offer after signing a local defender.
As Anorthosis had also recruited another centre-half, Borg has been reconsidering his options over the past 10 days.
Times of Malta is informed that the 26-year-old has not given up hope of landing a deal with a foreign club while Valletta are also believed to be interested in re-signing Borg.
Widely regarded as one of the strongest defenders in the country, Borg will not have a shortage of suitors if he decides to stay in the Premier League.
Elsewhere, Birkirkara have high hopes of strengthening their strikeforce in the next few days.
Coach Paul Zammit has been tracking a 24-year-old Brazilian striker who this week started a training stint with Birkirkara.
The striker’s name has been kept under wraps so far but sources told Times of Malta that he has a very interesting CV. While Birkirkara prefer to have a closer look at the Brazilian before offering him a deal, they also want to give the player the chance to form an opinion about the squad and level of football in Malta before deciding whether he wants to stay or not.
Nigerian forward Frank Temile is set to continue his career in the Maltese Premier League after flying in for talks with Qormi yesterday.
Temile played for Birkirkara last season but his contract was not renewed. The 24-year-old, who made a stunning impact when, as a teenager, he broke into Valletta’s first team in 2007/08, is looking to relaunch his career after a somewhat disappointing spell with Birkirkara.
Josef Mansueto, Qormi’s new coach, is said to be working around the clock to strengthen his squad after the Yellow-Blacks’ below-par performances in The Convenience Shop Malta Summer Cup.
Mansueto is gauging the qualities of two defenders and two midfielders, all foreigners.
He has signed midfielder Zoran Levnaic, formerly of Hibernians, and retained Nigerian striker Alfred Effiong.
Naxxar Lions yesterday completed the signing of Emenike Mbachu on a one-year deal. The 25-year-old Nigerian winger, also known as Epeleje, last played for Finnish club RoPS.
