Updated - Adds reaction by Ministry of Home Affairs
The Ministry of Home Affairs has denied that agreement has been reached with the Libyan government for Libyan radio and television stations to be allowed to broadcast from Malta.
The Libya Herald announced the deal earlier today, quoting Omar Al-Guweri, the head of the Media and Culture Authority, who was in Malta last week. He toldf the newspaper that a number of media agreements were signed with Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Manuel Mallia, including one to reactivate a radio station in Malta, closed since the revolution.
There was also agreement to open an office for the state-owned Wataniya TV channel in Malta.
However when contacted by Times of Malta, the Ministry of Home Affairs denied that such an agreement had been reached.
In Tripoli, government broadcasting services have been taken over by the Libya Dawn militia group but have now started broadcasting from Tobruk in the eastern extremity of Libya.
“We have a very good media facility in Malta but unfortunately it has been neglected,” Guwairi said of the radio station.
He added that Malta and Libya have also agreed to ease the process for Libyan journalists to come to Malta and vice-versa.
