Julian Saez wrote in his article ‘Can happiness be taught?’ (December 28) that depression in children didn’t exist up to a few years ago. From what I have read, depression in children and adults has been consistent for over 2,000 years.
It is easy to notice a child who is depressed. Teachers should be on the alert for children who seem unhappy and see how best they can be helped.
While on this subject, may I suggest some key practical points for a happier life. Be content with what you have, choose the simple things in life, a good daily laugh lifts up your spirits, don’t take things too seriously, smile so the world will smile back at you and avoid being lonely.
Good friends are a must, keep yourself busy and have something to look forward to.
