Hamad Alroosan, the Syrian boy who survived the October 2013 migrant boat tragedy and who captured the world media’s attention after being captured on camera by Times of Malta photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi, opens one of his birthday presents, a camera, earlier this week at his new home in Germany.
In a recent interview with the BBC World Service, the 12-year-old boy expressed the wish to get a camera for his birthday so that he could take pictures of the mountains in Germany. Immediately on hearing that, Mr Zammit Lupi organised sending a camera to him, with the help of Avantech, local agents for Canon cameras, and Hamad’s former school teacher in Malta, Sue Gregory, who paid him a surprise visit over the new year.
