A 30-year-old man from Fgura was this morning charged with seriously injuring the driver of a car in a head-on collision while he was driving under the influence of alcohol more than two years ago.

Before Magistrate Audrey Demicoli, Jeffrey Micallef pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring Joclyn Attard who suffered several fractures in the crash, including several broken bones and injuries to his pelvis, back and legs. 

Police Sergeant Ramon Mifsud Grech told the court that Mr Micallef failed a breathalyser test shortly after a head-on collision in St Andrews at around 8pm on November 11, 2012. The road had to be closed for some time. 

Mr Micallef was driving his vehicle in the direction of St Julian's when he crashed into a Rover being driven in the opposite direction by Mr Attard. 

Mr Attard told the court that he remembered very little about what happened after the crash because he lost consciousness and was taken out of the car by other people, including rescuers from the Civil Protection Department. 

He said he was driving towards St Paul's Bay when Mr Micallef crashed into him as he was negotiating the bend where the Forum Hotel used to be. "It all happened in a fraction of a second. All I know is that he drove straight into me," he said. 

Asked about the injuries he had suffered, Mr Attard said he had fractured toes and legs and also injured his pelvis and back. 

The case continues next month.
