Two drivers were seriously injured in a crash involving three cars at Tal-Barrani Road in Sta Lucija this evening.

The accident happened when a Toyota Vitz driven by a 45-year-old man from St Julian's and a Honda Prelude being driven by a 23-year-old from Zabbar crashed as they were driven towards Zejtun.

The Honda veered over the centre strip and into the path of an Opel Corsa coming from the opposite direction driven by a 26-year-old policeman from Mgarr.  The accident happened at about 9.20pm

The Honda driver and the policeman were seriously injured. The police described the policeman's condition as critical but stable.

The two drivers were trapped in their cars and needed to be freed by rescuers of the Civil Protection Department. They were taken to hospital in two ambulances escorted by police outriders.

A young woman who was in the Honda was slightly injured. A couple who were in the Vitz were unhurt.

The road was closed for investigation and clearing-up.
