Magistrates Giovanni Grixti and Myriam Hayman are to become judges, and lawyers Joe Mifsud and Monica Vella will serve as magistrates, the Cabinet has decided.
Their nomination was announced this evening. In a statement the government noted that five of the 10 nominations to the judiciary in this legislature involved women.
Dr Grixti had been serving as a magistrate since 1996 and Dr Hayman since 1998.
Dr Mifsud, 47, well known as a journalist-broadcaster was international secretary of the Labour Party and more recently a keen observer of developments in the Middle East.
He has served as a court expert since 2007 and in 2012 became a justice commissioner in a Local Tribunal.
In 2013 he became chairman of the appeals board on refugees and chairman of the Local Governance Board.
Dr Mifsud has published 10 books on politics, crime and terrorism. He is married to Maria née Mamo
Dr Monica Vella, born in 1974, has practiced law for the past 18 years.
She was Labour mayor of Xewkija for 11 years and later was commissioner for Justice in a Local Tribunal.
She was also president of the Fondazzjoni Ġwanni Pawlu II.
Dr Vella is married to George Cremona. They have two children.
