A 60-year-old Spanish sailor who found himself in difficulty in Malta's search and rescue waters was assisted to land by the Armed Forces of Malta following a distress call this morning.

The Spaniard sought assistance when his boat's engine stopped while he was some 100 miles off Malta.

The AFM said the cargo vessel Maersk Pittsburgh assisted in the operation.

The Spaniard was transferred to Haywharf in Pieta.

He was in good health and did not required medical assistance.

The sailor was welcomed by Spanish ambassador Jose Pons.
