Saviour Spiteri, 50, from Paola was charged in court today with making death threats against his wife earlier this month, including threatening to put her “in the earth.”

He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting officer Priscilla Caruana said Mr Spiteri is an alcoholic who can pose a danger to his wife.

Defence lawyer Toni Abela argued that the defendant and his wife are in the middle of separation proceedings. Mr Spiteri’s wife had unsuccessfully tried to have him removed from their home. However, he said, Ms Spiteri is finally getting her wish as his client is being evicted through criminal proceedings instead.

“Mark my words, this will spark a trend of people filing criminal proceedings to get their spouse out of the house,” he said.

Mr Spiteri was granted bail but ordered by the court not to approach his marital home.
