Five persons were injured, three of them grievously, in a head-on crash on the Coast Road (St Andrews Road) this morning.

The accident happened shortly after 8am close to the former Forum Hotel. It involved Honda Civic that was being driven towards St Paul's Bay by an 18-year-old man and a Volkswagen Golf being driven in the opposite direction by a 20-year-old from Mosta.

The injured included the drivers, two women aged 17 and 20 from Naxxar and St Paul's Bay, who were in the Civic and a 31-year-old woman from Mellieha who was a passenger in a Volkswagen Golf.

While the three people who were in the Honda were grievously injured, those who were in the Golf, were slightly injured.

The condition of two of them is believed to be serious. One was trapped in the wreckage.

The injured were taken to hospital in a number of ambulances. 

The road has been closed and a long traffic jam has built up. Traffic from St Paul's Bay is being diverted up t'Alla w Ommu hill.

MOTORCYCLIST INJURED IN SEPARATE ACCIDENT

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist was also injured in an accident near Sa Maison at about 8.35am. His motorcycle was involved in collision with a car, causing a closure of the road to Valletta during rush hour. A long traffic jam built up, with am ambulance finding it difficult to get through.
