Structural repair works, estimated at €3 million, will be carried out at Binja Buqana in Mtarfa in the coming weeks, Social Solidarity Minister Michael Farrugia said this morning.

Works will start at basement level and, once completed, engineers will check each affected apartment and make sure the building is safe.

A private company commissioned by the government had found parts of the structure were weak reinforcing a seperate inquiry which had concluded the same. Parts of the concrete ceiling had come apart and emergency repair works were carried out last year.

The inquiry reports have been sent to the Attorney General, who will decide whether action would be taken against the architect responsible, the minister said.

The buildings had been developed by the Housing Authority between 1994 and 1996.
