Energy and Health Minister Konrad Mizzi was the first to submit his name for the post of Labour Party deputy leader for party affairs.

The nomination this morning reinforces a Times of Malta report last Monday that Dr Mizzi is lined up to secure the post vacated by Toni Abela, who has been nominated for the European Court of Auditors.

His nomination was proposed by Ġuża Cassar and seconded by Justice Minister Owen Bonnici.

Labour delegates met last night to amend the party’s statute to allow MPs to contest for the post of deputy leader for party affairs. The amendment was approved with 392 votes in favour and one against.

Dr Mizzi is known to be a close ally of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

The nominations for the post will close on Tuesday. Elections will be held on  February 25.
