Former European Commissioner Tonio Borg has been nominated to serve on the Board of the European Medical Association. The Head of the Maltese Delegation in the EPP Group, David Casa and the EPP Group coordinator on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Peter Liese MEP congratulated Mr Borg.
“As a Commissioner Tonio Borg delivered what he had promised in his hearing and he did this in a manner that is completely above board, with characteristic integrity that has always been beyond reproach. Mr Borg still has much to offer to public policy even at European level and this nomination is testament to this. I wish him the best of luck with this new prestigious role,” Mr Casa said.
"The support of the Parliament for the European Medical Association position shows that Dr Borg earned a lot of trust during this term as Commissioner,” said Peter Liese MEP.
The European Medical Association's stated aim is to improve the quality of healthcare, the medical working conditions, give information, increase transparency and comparison and encourage collaboration and mobility.
As European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Tonio Borg, successfully steered through the EU Tobacco Products Directive. In May 2014 WHO awarded him a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his contribution to tobacco control.
