All Maltese will be able to download the music education app Meludia for free after an agreement between the government and the French creators.
The three-year agreement will cost the public purse €91,000, excluding VAT, and will give residents of Malta and visitors free access to the Meludia platform.
The proposal was made to the government some eight weeks ago by tenor Joseph Calleja, who is an ambassador for the French company.
“It only took the Prime Minister five minutes to snap up the idea,” one of the French creators said this morning during the launch at the Manoel Theatre.
The web-based app offers strong pedagogic qualities and a novel, cutting-edge approach to developing music skills, Mr Calleja said of his experience before accepting to become an ambassador for Meludia.
Malta is the second country in Europe, the other being Estonia, where Meludia has struck such an agreement.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this was not just a cultural tool but also and educational and fun application that could be used at home, in schools and anywhere else.
He said it was a socially just decision to offer this tool to everybody for free. “It will help us be better people,” he said.
The French company will visit the prison and Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow to demonstrate the app.
