Polo’s prestigious Cawnpore Cup is being held at the Marsa polo pitch on Saturday, June 11.

This year will see Team Cono Sur taking on Team MIA to win the coveted Cawnpore Cup, which is the ultimate trophy for polo players in Malta.

The teams are composed of some of the most experienced polo players. Team Cono Sur is made up of Desmond Mizzi, Martin Arrigo, Jeremy Besancon and Matthew Brincat, while team MIA will be composed of Julian Mamo, Karl Galea, Chris Delia and Alfie Manduca.

The silver trophy was first played for in 1901 and was passed on to the Malta Polo Club in 1947 by Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was a passionate polo player and a one-time president of the club. Lord Mountbatten introduced several Maltese players to the sport during his time, most notably the famous Maltese Cats team who won the Cawnpore Cup seven years in a row.

Founded in 1868, the Cawnpore Cup is fiercely contested each year and this year’s match will be no exception.

The match starts at 6pm. Spectators are invited to follow the game from the Club House and Chukkas Restaurant, following which there will be the presentation of the cup by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and a reception.

• Guests are invited to reserve their tickets by sending an e-mail to info@maltapolo.com or by calling 7947 6491/7980 8093.
