A 34-year-old man who raped a woman in Paceville back in 2014 was today sentenced to nine years' prison and a fine of more than €11,000.

Seykou Ballde, a Guinean national, had been arrested by police on 15 December 2014 after they heard a woman screaming on St George's street. He was taken to St Julian's police station but managed to escape.

A three-day manhunt culminated in him being captured in Bugibba.

Mr Ballde, who first came to Malta in September 2007, faced 12 charges, ranging from rape, assaulting police officers, escaping from police custody and breaching bail conditions in relation to another case in which he stood accused of having assaulted a prostitute.

Inspector Trevor Micallef prosecuted.
