An 18-year-old Danish man who was also a passenger in the car was seriously injured in the crash, which happened at around 5am.

Police said that it appeared the driver, a 23-year-old Balzan resident, was driving a Toyota Vitz from the direction of St Julians towards Sliema when he lost control of the car, crashing into a wall and subsequently another car.

An ambulance was quickly rushed to the scene, but medics were unable to save the driver's sister, who died on the scene. The driver and the 18-year-old were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital.

Although the Danish passenger is seriously injured, the driver escaped unharmed. The victim was on holiday to Malta from Denmark, where she was currently living.

Police closed off Sliema-bound lanes on Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli for a while this morning.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech is leading an inquiry into the incident, and police are investigating.
