The inclement weather we experienced lately again highlighted the vulnerability of Marsalforn Bay to northerly winds.

The complete destruction of the breakwater has exposed this popular tourist resort to gigantic waves, which, year in year out, destroy everything that stands in their way.

Unless Marsalforn is offered adequate protection, most of the investment made, be it public or private, remains at the mercy of the elements. Otters Aquatic Sports Club have had their brand new waterpolo pitch, and the refurbished perimeter netting to keep out jellyfish, severely damaged (photo).

They rightly expect works on providing proper shelter to the bay to start immediately.

What happened again reminds the authorities that swimming safely in the sea cannot be guaranteed not even in summer. Thus, the need to build a pool in Gozo has never been so badly felt.
