If "clouds symbolise the veil that shrouds God," as French writer Honoré de Balzac once wrote, then there was some serious celestial activity going on over Għasri yesterday evening.
The interesting formations continued this evening.
Photos taken by Times of Malta reader Noel Xerri show an extraordinary-looking cloud formation over Għasri and Żebbuġ, Gozo. The Times of Malta's deputy news editor Matthew Xuereb also photographed the clouds from Birguma.
"It was a sight," Mr Xerri said.
The densely textured clouds seen in the photos were low-level stratiform clouds, meteorologist Charles Galdies explained, with satellite images also revealing a layer of clouds above them.
The latter, Dr Galdies explained, were the result of strong convection caused by the low-pressure centre currently over the central Mediterranean.
"The arrangements of these different cloud types are determined by the current conditions we have over us," Dr Galdies said.
The photos were taken at around 6pm.
