The Maltese team at the Under-19 European Championships, currently underway in the Netherlands, conceded a third defeat in Group D after going down to Greece 20-7, yesterday.

Greece, who beat Montenegro 12-10 but lost to Hungary 10-8 earlier this week, got the win they needed to stay in contention for the title as the group phase of the tournament came to a close.

Iordanis Masmanidis and Alexandros Papanastasiou both scored five goals as Greece opened a cushion 9-2 lead at the half-way interval.

They held supremacy in the next two sessions, scoring 11 other goals in the process, to make sure of their place in the quarter-finals stage, starting today.

Despite the national team’s defeat, Ben Plumpton still succeeded in leaving his mark after scoring six goals with the other player on the scoresheet for our team being Miguel Zammit.

In the classification matches Malta will be playing for the 13-16 places.

Today, they play against Azerbaijan who finished last in Group B. The other two teams in the bottom bracket of the tournament are Turkey and Slovakia.
