Updated at 2.27pm with MFA statement

Referees have been instructed not to officiate tomorrow's Premier league match between Mosta and Birkirkara following a dispute with Mosta FC officials.

The issue arose after Mosta FC officials insulted referee Malcolm Spiteri on the social media following the Sliema vs Mosta trophy match, prompting the Malta Football Referees Association (MFRA) to demand an apology.

But in a reaction this morning, the Premier Division Standing Committee said the referees' decision does not respect players, clubs and the Malta Football Association's structures. It was important for all sides to discuss their issues around a table and not take such a decision.

In a statement this afternoon, the MFA said it took immediate action and instructed its Disciplinary Board to look into comments made by persons under its jurisdiction.

"All parties concerned must allow this disciplinary process to take its due course."

The MFA said it would never shy away from its responsibility to protect match officials and any other stakeholder in the game and unreservedly condemned any form of abuse.

However, the MFRA's directive instructing members not to officiate the BOV Premier League fixture was uncalled for, it said as it reminded all concerned of the obligations tied to their respective roles.

The MFA said it was discussing the situation internally and would pursue further discussions with all the parties concerned.
