An exhibition aimed at fuelling conversation about the role and function of contemporary art has just opened its doors at the Ġan Franġisk Abela Junior College.

The Contemporary Inside 2018 exhibition, the first of its kind at the college, is an attempt to expose the students to the latest developments in the local art scene.

Also open to the public, it is meant to create a space where viewers can engage with the artworks in a professional setting. In fact, the artists – Pierre Portelli, Vince Briffa, Austin Camilleri, Sina Farrugia Micallef, Patrick Fenech and Trevor Borg – will hold a series of talks and workshops for the duration of the exhibition.

The show is being mounted as part of Xrar, an artistic project supported by the Premju tal-President għall-Kreattività 2017, which was developed by the Junior College and Troupe 18:45 under the curation of Trevor Borg. The project also includes a visual arts expo for young artists at the college campus.

In artistic circles it is quite common to refer to the creative spark (xrar in Maltese), and the project makes reference to the multiple sparks motivating various pieces of art using as many media as possible.

Xrar is meant to question the confines of what is perceived as art and to involve young people in this dialogue.

For this reason, the project is being exhibited at the Junior College – which will act as a catalyst to promote the possibilities that exist for creative practice within educational institutions.

Contemporary Inside 2018 will be open until March 9, from Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm.
