In the last 18 months or so the board of The Manoel Theatre have pushed the envelope somewhat in their desire to encourage more young people to attend and perform at our national theatre.

During the current theatre season there has already been one production at the Manoel aimed specifically at young audiences, when the Birmingham Stage Company presented their acclaimed piece George's Marvellous Medicine.

This month, to be precise between April 20 and 23, the theatre will be putting on an opera production specifically targeted at a youthful audience. Mozart's The Magic Flute is an opera which will hopefully not only appeal to children but also to an adult audience. The piece is both a magical fairytale and an allegory of the triumph of good over evil. This one-hour performance is based on the original libretto taken from an oriental fairytale and will be directed by Tony Attard.

Naturally Mozart's music for the opera will figure large in the production and there will be a seven-piece live orchestra on stage. This will allow the audience to see and appreciate the interaction between singers and musicians. The musical director will be Sarah Spiteri.

A largely young and unknown cast will take part. The leading role of Tamino will be played by Nicky Agius Darmanin. Pamina by Dorothy Baldacchino, Papageno the bird catcher by Kevin Caruana and the Queen of the Night by Pauline Longo. Others taking part include Louis Cassar, Marouska Attard, Enrique Cuschieri, Michelle Cachia Castalletti, Cliff Zammit and Clare Ghigo.

The Magic Flute will be staged at The Manoel Theatre on April 20 and 23. Tickets from The Manoel Theatre booking office.
