Been there. . . Seen that...

This month we welcome a new contributor to this column, Mark Rogerson

The last few weeks were the kind that are jam-packed with many an event. The Eurovi... (don't go there)... The Fashion Awards (a big room full of beautiful frocks on stage and some frightful ones among the crowds), the Sex and the City premère (...wait for the DVD), the Desigual clothing launch (fun and wonderfully branded) and the Movie Spectacular Music Concert at the MCC (entertaining and comfortable).

With the last two being possibly - somewhat surprisingly - the most enjoyable events, the Fashion Awards were a great place to network. Unfortunately, maybe only a third of the crowd seemed truly interested in the beautiful creations on stage. Local designers Charles and Ron launched their dazzling Autumn/Winter 2008 collection, which mixed black and silver together with dazzling effect, and a rather clever Italian chap utilised some fabric and pins to create stunning gowns in barely even a minute.

Now to the event I know a lot of my galpals were waiting for. The Sex and the City premère really was fun - and certainly a reason to get all spruced up, as we know the characters in the film would have done for such an event. Unfortunately, having been a big fan of the TV series, I felt the film didn't live up to the expectation it had built around itself - and certainly didn't live up to the TV series. Thankfully, I have since discovered I'm not the only one who feels this way. Good try, but better luck next time, girls.

The launch of Spanish clothing brand Desigual brings new and exciting fashions to the Maltese shores, all the way from Barcelona, Spain. On arrival at the launch, I was given a fantastic little freebie - in the form of a beach towel which turns into a bag (top marks for innovation) and they certainly made the best of the surroundings. Blown-up projections of the current campaign were shone onto the bastions with great effect, and the venue draped with clothing to resemble a typical balcony-style "hanging dryer". With the great atmosphere, fun crowd and unique style, I'm pretty sure this is a brand to watch.

More recently - and we're only half way through June - there's been the Ira Losco album launch and the Friday the 13th candle-lit walk at Fort St Angelo. While the Ira Losco album launch was fun, it's great to see our older (and with a bit of a clean, prettier) more historical parts of the island being used in such a thoughtful, creative manner. With Friday the 13th being apparently rather unlucky (and I myself being quite unlucky generally) I was unsure of what to expect. But what I found was a captivating environment of music, superb architecture and delicious Maltese food. The newly restored St Anne's Chapel was lit up to wonderful effect and housed an exhibition of artifacts dating from the times of the Knights from Rhodes - who seem to have loved little Malta, with our islands sharing very similar architecture, I'm sure they felt at home here.

With the last few weeks having been quite busy (well... with what I can fit on these pages) I'm looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year has to offer. I'm sure there will be beach parties, launch parties, exhibitions and more... nights in, nights out, movie nights, games nights, maybe even the odd karaoke night (you know who you are) - but what am I really looking forward to? Actually it's a quiet retreat this weekend, to a beautiful farmhouse in Gozo, complete with pool. Cheers.
