A magistrate has ordered that a young man be detained in jail for a minimum of 1,000 days until he pays the law courts Lm5,000, originally a personal guarantee, which he owed because he had breached bail conditions. Redent Falzon, 24, was one of eleven men who had been charged over violent incidents that broke out during the Zabbar feast in September last year.
He had been granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm5,000.
Mr Falzon had however breached his bail conditions and therefore owed the law courts Lm5,000.
On seeing that Mr Falzon did not pay the money owed by law, the assistant registrar of the criminal courts filed an application requesting that action be taken against him.
Consequently a case was initiated before Magistrate Saviour Demicoli who yesterday ordered that he be detained for a minimum of 1,000 days until he pays the Lm5,000 owed in personal guarantee.
