Smoke from burning AC unit filled apartments

Emergency services have responded to a fire in an apartment block in Qawra caused by an external air conditioning unit.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon on Triq J. Quintinus.

A police spokesperson said smoke from the burning unit had filled several apartments, leading to 10 people being taken to Mater Dei Hospital for smoke inhalation.

A Civil Protection Department spokesperson said two fire engines were involved in the operation.

He added that emergency services had also responded to a car on fire in a semi-baseement garage in Birkirkara, as well as an ironmongery in Gzira, during which several cats and other animals were rescued. No injuries were reported from these incidents.
